The Family Literacy Committee is pleased to work with Kamloops Honda to challenge the community and local schools to collect gently used and new children’s books. The books will be sorted and distributed to local agencies to share with families. Our hope is for every child to have good quality books at home to read and enjoy. Books will also be used to stock Bright Red Bookshelves at key locations in the city. Books will be given to children at ABC Family Literacy Day on January 26th
Thank you to Kamloops Honda and the community for their wonderful support in donating over 40,000 books the past three years.
If you would like to volunteer to help sort books, please contact Fiona Clare 250-319-9653

On January 27, 2013, Canadians from coast-to-coast will have 15 minutes of fun in support of Family Literacy Day®, an annual initiative developed by ABC Life Literacy Canada to encourage parents, children, teens and seniors to spend at least 15 minutes enjoying a learning activity every day.

In our own community, Interior Savings presents "Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week January 20-27, 2013 in partnership with Literacy in Kamloops, the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Daily News, School District 73, and many other organizations.

Together we are creating "Unplug and Play". This booklet will include activities and events families can participate in during Family Literacy Week. We invite you to celebrate Family Literacy Week with us by organizing an activity or hosting an event that brings families together. Family Literacy Week is about learning together as a family in fun and different ways. There are many ways to practice literacy together as a family - following a recipe, singing a song or playing a game are just a few ways to engage in literacy activities. For more ideas, please go to the national website http://abclifeliteracy.ca/en/celebrate-family-literacy-day.

Some of the celebrations and events already being planned are:

1.ABC Family Literacy Day at the Henry Grube, January 26, 2013, a fun filled morning for families with young children

2.Heap the Honda Children’s Book Drive, January 5 – 27th
*Free family swims
*Story times at the libraries

"What they do not value, they will not protect. And what they do not protect, they will lose."
-Charles Jordan, PLAY AGAIN

"PLAY AGAIN is an award winning documentary directed by Tonje Hessen Schei, produced by Meg Merrill, and edited by David Bee. The soundtrack includes music from Icelandic band Sigur Ros and singer Kimya Dawson.

At a time when children spend more time in the virtual world than the natural world, PLAY AGAIN unplugs a group of media savvy teens and takes them on their first wilderness adventure, documenting the wonder that comes from time spent in nature and inspiring action for a sustainable future.

This film encourages individuals, families, schools, and communities to examine their relationships with both screen technology and nature, and inspires them to take action to reconnect children to the natural world."
